A Walk Down Memory Lane

A very successful Seniors gathering was held at the Tiaro RSL and Memorial Hall on Wednesday 14th November, named “A Walk Down Memory Lane”.

40 of the Shires Seniors were invited to an inaugural gathering for the start of the making of a CD and DVD of some of the tales and memories of the past.

The reason that the Tiaro Shire Promotions decided to go down this track was, it was felt that with the forthcoming Council amalgamation could cause the loss of some of the Shires history, as the big picture sometimes does not allow the small picture to be seen.

Trevor Keightley the MC of the day went around to each person to have them tell us their name where they were born and or moved to the Shire and a summary of their life.

Then to start the stories rolling the MC read out some of Keith Hoffman’s letters that he had written of his childhood and his younger days, Wil Nahrung told a tale of the days he used to run the shop at Miva and the delivery run where if the customer was not home he would go into the house and put the butter in the pantry, bread in the bin and chook food in the shed, slightly different today. Len Dakin told of the days that when they used to go to the dances at Gundiah they would wait for the train to slow down at Theebine and jump on and jump of at Gundiah  but sometimes the timing was not right so they had to walk home. Lilian Coyne told of the days when the night cart was used as the only mode of transport to the dance on a Saturday night, they had to clean it out first and it had a bad problem of backfiring and catching alight so they all had to abandon the cart and put out the fire before they proceeded. Ken Stratford told of the trips to the dances on Saturday night where they had to drive the truck up the cutting at Gootchie in reverse with all the boys pushing, guess the girls stayed on the truck and the stories went on and on and we all had a great day.

The Gootchie QCWA provided morning and afternoon tea and a great lunch of which we thank them, also our thanks to the RSL for providing their facility and equipment.

So where do we go from here. Well it was agreed that we will meet again in February next year to continue gathering of stories and the copying of old photos, in the meantime we will apply for a RADF grant to help offset  some of the costs in producing the CD & DVD, additional invites will go out for the next gathering and if any person knows of somebody that would like to attend please contact either:
